Greetings to all FatC Walking Club readers.

I survived the New Year Celebrations and I now extend New Year Greetings to all our loyal readers.

Pesky is due to return home and no doubt will be regaling you with all his culinary exploits from beautiful Tasmania. Although he did concede that he will run a mile if anyone placed a tape measure around his girth. It seems that he may have over indulged in delights from the Cadbury Schweppes choklit factory in Tasmania. Margery Dawes would be very proud!! Lets hope in the 2 weeks away, he actually did undertake some exercise and no doubt, if he walked to the corner store he will regale you with such exploits!

Dina has taken time after painting her nails and as a new years resolution is promising to renew her walks in 2009.

For all of you wanting news about Churchill, we hope to provide updates shortly.

I look forward to providing more of an insight into the walking adventures of the group when we return soon.

Happy New Year 2009 FatCers!!

Well dear reader it has come to the end of another year and on behalf of all of those from the Fat C Walking Club, I wish you a Happy New Year for 2009. In the last few weeks Pesky has been sunning himself in beautiful Tasmania and has found new friends at the beach amongst the whales. Dina has been applying finger nail polish daily in anticipation of the coming year. As you can imagine I have been faithful to the cause and maintained my exercise regime as much as possible during this very distracting time of the year. Even on Christmas Day I took the dog Tom for a long walk. It was wonderful as the suburb was deserted due to the time of day. Indeed I highly recommend a walk in the middle of any day in an attempt to walk off the excesses that abound at this time of the year.

Readers will recall Tom (the golden retriever) featuring in our travels to Sydney earlier this year. On this occasion the dog was spending part of his Australian whirlwind tour in Melbourne.

Having been back at work this week, I have taken the traditional walk along the Yarra River and Dina and I have resisted the temptation of “Yum Cha”. There is a high degree of excitement in the air as one walks close to the areas of celebration in Melbourne. This assists with the enjoyment of a longer than usual walk. Expect the night sky in Melbourne to be illuminated with fireworks at the dawn of the New Year.

We are welcoming some new members to the FatC walking Club in 2009. Unfortuantely Pavarotti will be a “no show” but we expect another Italian “Soprano” – “Tony” to join us early next year. It is hoped that “Cricket” will also rejoin us next year for our lunchtime walks certainly in the early part of the year.

I am glad you have followed our progress over the year and indeed managed to move past the indulgencies exhibited by Pesky in his entries to this site!

We look forward to providing further contributions in 2009.

After much cajoling Pesky decided to walk with Dina and I last Friday. As usual Dina and I waited for him to arrive after devouring his pre lunch lunch consisting of a mini lettuce leaf;a mini home grown Roma tomato and mini can of tuna in brine. Unfortunately mini is not usually a word one would associate with Pesky but he seems to thrive on its use in the hope it will stick to him in an adjectival sense.

Speaking of size reduction our patron was heard to describe Dina and I as having failed in our task. There is an old Cantonese proverb that glass houses often shatter when least expected.

This week I leave for Queensland to inform our northern neighbours of the worthwhile pursuit of the joys of the walking club. I will provide reports of the trip when I return.

In the meantime I shall miss the delights of “Kenny’s’ lunch bars dotted throughout central Melbourne. They provide healthy and nutritious lunchtime sandwiches and salad rolls. Unlike Pesky’s dietary intake the rolls are so satisfying it is unnecessary for Dina and I to consume the mini steel tuna container to satisfy our hunger as it seems must “mini” Pesky to satiate his immense appetite!

Well Pesky makes another entry. Its about time dear readers. If the truth be known I have been carrying the site waiting for him to make a constructive entry. Unquestionably I will be waiting for sometime if his most recent instalment is any indication ! Sloth and ennui. I must confess to a slight weariness reading the latest entry myself. Perhaps Quirky takes a look at his grand girth before he casts the first accusation and cheap shot at both Dina and myself. Accordingly those university professors enjoying and reading Quirky’s entry may care to return to their thesis’ on the re-assignment of nuclear physics. For those who actually enjoy this site I will continue!

No doubt Pesky has logged out at this stage! Far too mundane for him !

I am writing this in Sydney, having been here since Thursday last week. I have discovered a series of walking tracks not far from the central Sydney CBD. One along the Bay and another not far from the Sydney Fresh Fish Market. Both tracks involve bridge crosses proving a picturesque view of the city skyline including the Telstra tower and surrounding developments. The City of Sydney have recently allowed access to the wharf areas creating a full walking track of nine kilometres over the ANZAC Bridge.

On these recent walks in Sydney, I have rediscovered the pleasure of taking a dog. People are more likely to stop and chat. For those of you who are reluctant to take up the challenge and commence or re-commence walking, I thoroughly recommend having a dog and an Apple-Mac ipod on your travels. This is another way to enjoy exercise without it appearing as a chore.

I will provide further updates of my walks around Sydney and reveal some tantalizing surprises shortly.

Such that you are under absolutely no illusions Dina and I have been walking at lunchtimes, whenever we are able to spare the time. These are usually without Pesky, given his fictitious ailments and the apparent ennui displayed whenever he is invited to accompany us on the walk.

We are seriously craeting a new webiste to include Pesky as the only contributor to the “Even Fatter C Walking Club” ! Although on second thoughts Pavarotti may qualify for that site as well !

It has been over a week since we returned to Melbourne from Bruny Island in Tasmania. The green peaceful surrounds of the Island supplanted by the harsh grey tones of the city landscape in Melbourne. During the walk today Pesky was lamenting the fact that the reality of city life ought not impinge upon our personal goals and aspirations. I think Pesky sees himself as an ancient Chinese philosopher. Well ancient he might be, philosopher he certainly is not! Maybe it was the presence of the ducks in the river today, perhaps the river’s soybean hue, maybe the gentle Asian music playing in the background , its very hard to fathom. Despite Pesky’s ruminations, Dina & I reflected that it is highly important to maintain a healthy lifestyle & we agreed the FatC’s principles must be applied to ensure that everything stays in perspective.

Dina & I managed to walk most days in the past week. I trialled a new pair of running shoes especially in light of the change of season. Pesky walked on two occasions but was primarily engaged in work conferences. On Friday as usual he had a gastronomical 3 course lunch including dessert , at which I am told he devoured the full cream with aplomb. Moderation is not a word in Pesky’s vocabulary. There was some concern during the main course that the enamel from his dinner plate had been removed with the excessive tongue action. I do not even wish to visualise the scene! Pavarotti who also attended the lunch thought it quite amusing. I am sure others shared such sentiments.

Next week will be our last in Melbourne before we venture out on the walking trip to Tasmania the following week. I am sure it will be very nteresting.

Last week Pesky begrudgingly walked twice, Dina three times and I walked four. Weather prevented me from walking the full five days. One of the walks was directly after a shower of rain. The best part about the change of weather is the absence of people on the walking track.Winter will provide its own challenges for outdoor exercise but the FCWC recommend warmer walking clothes, such as those found in the Adidas or Reebok clothing range and Brooks footwear. I must say Dina is always up to date with her walking gear and as for Pesky well he is a fashion disaster as you might no doubt imagine!

I concede it has been sometime since I appraised you of the walks over the last week or thereabouts. Whilst the pressures of work & immediate family issues continue, the walks at lunchtime assume much more importance. Dina, Pesky and I have elderly parents and the walks enable us to compare notes and discuss issues which may play upon our mind at that time. There is no doubt the walking escape is extremely therapeutic especially if the pace of the walk is increased periodically over the planned course. Dina sets the pace for the walks & Pesky follows (as he has done throughout his life!).

Dina and I are still managing to walk quite often during the week. Pesky as usual has the lure of the long luncheon engagement quite frequently. Although a bolt of lightning has finally penetrated the otherwise impenetrable skull & he has now appreciated the importance of regular exercise after education from me during this period.

The Fat C walking club has now been in existence for over 2 years. We are celebrating by conducting a walking trip in Tasmania and then hopefully another trip to Sydney. Its easy for those of you who wish to emulate our approach. We hope in the new future to produce handbooks which will be available through this site with various checklists and upon attaining a certain point level will enable you to arrange individual and collective rewards including retreats away with fellow club members.

Good news ..for all of you who thought Dina had been silenced…she is soon to make her first entry to the site much to Pesky’s chagrin. He is quaking in his “Brooks” joggers wondering what is to be revealed. I can’t wait!

In the meantime happy walking until next time….
